Cómo funciona

try / need / mean + -ing o to

Objetivo: otro grupo de verbos donde -ing y to no son intercambiables. try + to = hacer el esfuerzo, intentar algo difícil (I tried to restart it); try + -ing = probar un método a ver si resuelve (Try restarting it). need + to = tú debes hacerlo (You need to update the app); need + -ing = necesidad pasiva, algo que hay que hacer (The app needs updating = needs to be updated). mean + to = tener la intención (I meant to call you); mean + -ing = implicar o suponer (This will mean waiting longer). help admite las dos con el mismo sentido (this helps (to) reduce errors).

② mean confundido. I meant to call (intención) ≠ this means waiting (implica).
③ to + -ing. Nunca juntes to e -ing: ✗ need to updating → ✓ need to update / needs updating.
④ help + to obligatorio. No lo es: this helps reduce errors es tan correcto como helps to reduce.

🪤 Falso amigo: «intentar» siempre parece try to, pero cuando propones una solución a ver si funciona, el inglés natural es try + -ing: try turning it off and on.

En soporte técnico, try + -ing es la forma amable de proponer pasos: try clearing your cache, try logging in from another browser. Suena a sugerencia, no a orden. Y need + -ing señala lo pendiente sin culpar a nadie: the license needs renewing.
