How much time do we have? Not much — but plenty of options.

Lección 60 · Mucho y poco: much, many, a lot

Cómo funciona

much/many para preguntar y negar; a lot of para afirmar
01

much (incontable) y many (contable plural) reinan en preguntas y negativas: How much time? How many people? not much, not many. En afirmativas, el inglés natural prefiere a lot of o plenty of (ambos valen para contable e incontable). Y ojo con la a: a little / a few = «algo» (positivo); little / few = «casi nada» (negativo).

¿Cuánto tiempo?
español: cuánto = incontable

El español usa «mucho/poco» en todas partes; el inglés reserva much/many para preguntas y negativas, y afirma con a lot of.

INCONTABLE

CONTABLE

many / a few
many peoplemuchas personas

En afirmativas, a lot of y plenty of sirven para los dos: a lot of time, a lot of people.

Igual con a little / little.

✅ Afirmativo
We have a lot of options for you.
wi hav a lot ov OP-shenz for yu · tenemos muchas opciones para ti
⛔ Negativo
There isn't much time left.
der IZ-ent mach taim left · no queda mucho tiempo
❓ Interrogativo
How many agents are on call?
✗ We have much time → ✓ We have a lot of time. ✗ I have few minutes (suena a «casi ninguno») → ✓ I have a few minutes.
vowel · la vocal corta de lot (lot) y many (ME-ni) schwa · el a reducido de a lot of / a few: a-lot-ov consonant · el grupo ch de much (mach) ending · la -s de options / agents

cuando «mucho/poco» se calca
03
❌ MAL
much en afirmativa neutra
✅ BIEN
afirmativa → a lot of
  • ① much/many en afirmativa neutra. ✗ We have many options → ✓ We have a lot of options.
  • ② much con contable. ✗ much people → ✓ many people / a lot of people.
  • ③ few sin a (queriendo decir «algunos»). ✗ I have few minutes → ✓ I have a few minutes.
  • ④ a little con contable. ✗ a little questions → ✓ a few questions.

04

En servicio, a lot of transmite abundancia sin sonar informal, y plenty of tranquiliza: Take your time, there's plenty of it. Evita much en afirmativas: suena a examen, no a conversación.

« We've had a lot of interest, so there are only a few spots left. »

Combinas abundancia (a lot of interest) con escasez (a few spots) para crear urgencia amable.

Ojo: en registro muy formal, much sí aparece en afirmativas (There is much to discuss); al hablar, prefiere a lot of.
