I'm at work now. She's in the hospital for a checkup.
Con lugares como work, school, hospital, bed, prison, el artículo depende de si hablas de la función (sin the: at work, go to school) o del edificio (con the). Ojo con el matiz de EE. UU. 🔊
Cómo funciona
Ciertos lugares se usan sin artículo cuando hablas de su función habitual: at work, go to school (como estudiante), in bed, go to bed, at home, in prison, at university. Llevan the cuando te refieres al edificio concreto: at the office, meet at the school (visitarlo). Matiz de EE. UU.: in the hospital (paciente), donde el inglés británico dice in hospital.
«En el trabajo / en la escuela» (función) = at work / at school, sin the. El español pone «el/la»; el inglés lo quita.
Pregúntate: «¿hablo de para qué sirve (estudiar, trabajar, curarse) o del edificio?». Función → sin the; edificio → the.

Errores típicos
- ① the con la función. ✗ at the work / at the home / go to the bed → ✓ at work / at home / go to bed.
- ② Sin the para el edificio. ✗ meet at office → ✓ meet at the office.
- ③ Hospital AmE. Para el paciente en en-US: ✓ in the hospital (no in hospital).
- ④ go to school como visita. «Voy a la escuela a recogerlo» (edificio) → go to the school; como estudiante → go to school.
Cultura en contexto
Estas expresiones son diarias en atención al cliente para explicar disponibilidad: She's at work, so she'll call you after five. Usarlas sin artículo suena natural y evita el calco del español.
« He's in the hospital this week, so we've put a hold on the account. »
El matiz británico/estadounidense (in hospital vs in the hospital) es un buen recordatorio de que este curso apunta al inglés de EE. UU.
Ojo: son expresiones fijas; conviene aprenderlas de memoria más que deducirlas cada vez.
